On School Board, COPE continues to support Mandarin emersion programs and wants more support for ESL students in Vancouver schools. COPE will launch a review of all historical bylaws to ensure those deemed racist or otherwise discriminatory are repealed. For example: there are still racist property deeds which state that certain land cannot be sold to Chinese people. COPE will continue to support settlement services and coordinate with federal and provincial authorities to make sure new immigrants living in Vancouver are supported. COPE supports neighbourhood houses and enhanced community centre programming to engage new immigrants.

Vancouver’s vibrancy and charm are rooted in its cultural diversity and unique neighbourhoods. Greens at all political levels support the cultural programs and community services that strengthen this diversity and support new immigrants. In Vancouver that includes support for organizations like S.U.C.C.E.S.S. and for events and festivals that celebrate our cultural heritage. It also includes assured funding for community libraries that offer free ESL learning centres and help with job searches.

Vision Vancouver supports the work done by the Mayor’s Working Group on Immigration. There were three main objectives of the of the Working Group the first was to initiate a dialogue between First Nations and leaders in the ethnic communities. The second was an innovative mentorship program which pairs new immigrants with a city staff member, who volunteers to give personal advice and support, to help the participants navigate the job market. The third initiative was to investigate the challenges that temporary foreign workers face in Vancouver. The results of this work will be reviewed by the Mayor for action.
@NPAVancouver
Many new immigrants to Vancouver are small business people. Our NPA plan will support small businesses by providing tax relief and cutting red tape as described. The NPA has a strong track record of delivering successful partnerships with other levels of government to benefit Vancouver’s long-term social and economic prosperity. Examples include historic social and supportive housing partnerships, unwavering support for Olympic Games, the Canada Line and restoration of Stanley Park. In our next mandate, an NPA City Council will build on that track record of success by identifying a reliable set of collaborative objectives with national, provincial and regional governments to promote economic prosperity. This will include a significant emphasis on immigrant settlement programs – particularly in schools. To celebrate Vancouver’s diverse communities.

Although immigration is not something dealt with directly at the civic level, NSV believes that City Council should act as advocate and activist on behalf of the people of Vancouver when dealing with higher levels of government. We need people with experience in working with immigrant groups to participate in City advisory committees and neighbourhood councils. NSV is dedicated to ensuring that these groups are representative of Vancouver’s diversity. Often affordability is an issue for new immigrants.
