#SAYWHAT : PUBLIC SPACES

@COPEVancouver
COPE wants to create a vibrant bustling city. COPE would license more buskers and allowing performers to play in more spaces. COPE would also revise vending by-laws and stop the unnecessary ticketing of binner showcasing re-discovered treasures. The city has now allowed the operation of a Sunday Downtown Eastside street market which has been widely successful. COPE would support the expansion of the market. COPE supports peaceful protest and appreciates Vancouver’s activist tradition of public demonstrations promoting peace, social justice and human rights. Currently the Occupy Vancouver movement is making new history, and COPE continues to stand in solidarity.

Turn streets into pedestrian-only promenades & parks. Ease restrictions on food vendors.

Public spaces, the heart of our city, should be expanded. Green Park Board Commissioner, Stuart Mackinnon, has championed lower community centre fees and free entry for toddlers to ensure accessibility for all. He’s stood against commercialization of our public spaces and for more neighbourhood arts and cultural events to foster community spirit. We believe busking and mobile food carts add to the vibrancy of our streets and we support more car-free street festivals. We support the peaceful “Occupy Vancouver” camp on the art gallery lawns, hoping it ends through achieving real progress in addressing the issues that prompted it.

@visionvancouver
Vision Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson has said his goal is to have a peaceful, sensible resolution to the Occupy Vancouver encampment; where cities have gone in with force, like Melbourne or Oakland, it has made things worse, and the Mayor has said he wants to avoid this. Vision Vancouver will find innovative ways to create new green spaces throughout the city by converting currently under-used land to park spaces. Local communities could help us to identify those spaces, unlocking new green space in neighbourhoods across the city. In addition, we will work to create new public space along the Fraser River, allowing more public access to the water and creating enhanced park spaces. Vision Vancouver’s food cart program has been very popular by providing healthy, delicious and diverse food options. Vision Vancouver will work to create a new public square downtown building on the lessons of the 2010 Olympic Games.

@NPAVancouver
The NPA has a long history of supporting accessible public spaces in neighbourhoods across Vancouver.  Our NPA Team will initiate active community engagement and listening sessions with local residents, businesses, transportation and community organizations. Strengthen the independence of the Vancouver Park Board to maintain and enhance the wonderful public park spaces we all enjoy. Encourage more cultural performances in public spaces. Support a full size Creekside Park at Northeast False Creek. Enforce the city’s no camping policy and municipal by-laws at the Vancouver Art Gallery so this public space can be returned to the public. Expand food cart options for Vancouver parks. Enhance traditional role of horticulture in Vancouver parks and public spaces.

@nsvancouver
Through community consultation, we would look into ways to expand and enhance public spaces. On Occupy Vancouver, please see Randy Helten’s innovative “Good Sense – Good Faith” solution

The Parks Board should take priority in creating new neighbourhood scale gathering places, especially in underserved areas like Mount Pleasant, South Vancouver, Champlain Heights, Kerrisdale, Dunbar to name a few. There need to more social gathering places for Seniors that is easily accessible from their homes in which they grew up, raised their families and are now minding the young ones.
