Not Unreasonable by The Tomorrow Society

This song was written in hot anticipation of the upcoming Vancouver Municipal Election, by International Tomorrow Society (Vancouver’s newest glam folk band). The lyrics are an arrangement of other peoples’ words, sent to the band via Facebook, e-mail and text message. Friends and Cyber Contacts were asked to write in with “self-serving by- laws”. It is objectively cool that even when people were given the instruction to be selfish, they couldn’t help coming up with good ideas. “I think every community should have a planetarium?” Really? THAT’S your idea of selfish? Good work, people. You are nice, and also funny.

Thank you to everyone who wrote in with their ideas. If we didn’t use your words, it was only because they were hard to sing, and we thought our first song should be under ten minutes, for the sake of modesty. We think you should vote on Saturday, November 19th. Check out what the people at Get Your Vote On Are Doing. It’s fun, and will inspire you. And who knows, maybe we’ll get the planetarium.

With thanks, and apologies to Veda Hille, whose Complaints Choir, Confessions, and Happy Birthday Vancouver pieces all heavily influenced the creation of this song. Except that Veda’s pieces all have 1,000 % more chords and are super awesome. Yeah!

Recorded in one of the many Pandora House Living Rooms

Thank you to James Meger for the microphone, and Vinny Gibson for listening to the song 1,000 times while he made soup.

International Tomorrow Society is:

Barbara Adler (accordion plus vox) & Gavin Youngash (guitar plus vox)

Lyrics

The city will provide free dog walking
to anyone ready to trade their poodle in
for a real dog

Every day you ride your bike to work shall be
One day’s wages off your income tax
and there should be free coffee

Or pay what you can coffee all across the city
I’d pay usually– just the option would be nice
It’d build community

I think we need “Water Tower Night”
A mental health program run every Saturday night
We’d erect a temporary water tower in front of the Roxy
Depressives would be given a high powered rifle
and legal immunity.

I mean a paintball gun, obviously.
What kind of maniac do you think I am?

Chorus

Oh no, I’m not unreasonable
I just have needs
I want someone
to pay attention to me,
even when I speak lightly

All roommates are required by law
to scrape their dishes before abandoning them
in the sink for weeks

A tax of $500 per TV in any bar
You shall not sell a burger cheaper than a veggie burger
in the same place

Women over 57 will get a chocolate ration
And if you don’t like the rain, we will fly you to Hawaii
Thank you, government

Poor musicians who qualify
shall have a special seat
at the front of the bus
to store their instruments
and if you give them dirty looks
you get locked in a room
and forced to listen
to new Sting records

Stipends for street artists
Every bar shall have a music license
And unless given a specific exemption for technical reasons
All performing stages are required to install a trap door
and a functional front curtain.
Goddammit. How else is a working magician
gonna make it in this city…

And I’m just wondering…Can I have a by-law that makes people get out of my way?

Chorus

I know these are wishful thoughts
but I think it’d be great if each community had a planetarium
and star shows were given once a week
There should be a number you can call
for someone to read out loud to you
There should be HAM radio stations in each community
just interviewing locals, and someone’s kid,
yeah, someone’s kid, could play the Tuba!

People making more than a bag of garbage per week
Shall be buried in styrofoam by the community
– This will build neighbourhood.

A hefty fine per area of pavement on your property
Money from this pavement tax shall fund the restoration
of native plants.

Ban all West Side baby buggies
that are as big as the SUV’s they came in.
Yes, we know you can procreate…
no go home, and stop blocking the doorway to my coffee bar!

Chorus

The BILTMORE CAUCUS CABARET & DEBATE

MONDAY, 14 NOVEMBER, 2011

Biltmore Cabaret
Doors at 6:30pm
Show at 7:00-10:00pm
Door by Donation

// REGISTER HERE //

Come out for a pint or two to whet your political appetite with a mix of musicians, artists and City Council hopefuls. The evening will feature the Candidates for VISION, COPE, NPA and INDEPENDENTS in an intimate atmosphere. While Get Your Vote On will be engaging your minds in this event, we have also made arrangements to have your heart and soul happy. We are lucky to have the very talented Barbra Adler (of FANG! and the BC Memory Game) with us!

‘SPEED-DATING’ CHALLENGE

Before the debate, the candidates will be circulating booth-to-booth sitting with different folks and fielding the questions of individual voters (YOU!) in an intimate conversational context in the cosy confines of the booths at the Biltmore Cabaret. This session is designed to give attendees and City Hall hopefuls the opportunity to really connect face-to-face with the people they hope to represent at City Hall. Every 5 minutes the issue of discussion changes and the candidate switches tables to the next booth. Pretty cool, eh?

DEBATE

Vancouver votes on SATURDAY, Nov 19, 2011. Young folks want to know where the parties stand on issues that matter to them. What better way than to ask them in front of many people? Mo Dhaliwal will be hosting a friendly and fair question-answer format debate where questions will be fielded from the floor and from invited people in the community.

COPE supports the creation of community gardens wherever possible and encourage community supported agriculture across the city. COPE has called for permanent infrastructure support Vancouver’s burgeoning farmers’ markets and plans to create an urban farming hub to support markets year round. COPE is also calling for the Avalon Dairy lands to be preserved and not turned into a large market condominium development. COPE would support having some of the lands protected as Vancouver heritage, as well as asking the province to include the 1.26 acres in the Agricultural Land Reserve.

I’ve worked on organic farms, and am an avid gardener. Without community gardens and urban farms we can never achieve the food self-sufficiency that I feel will be essential in the near future. As such, my party will look at reclaiming unused land like “brownfields” around light industrial areas and having them turned over to community gardens. I’d have at least one permaculture specialist working for the city, planning out periennial high yield gardens that can feed many with litte upkeep; I’d make gardening expenses tax deductable and tax lawns that tax the earth, and allow community centres to serve as distribution locations for CSA’s and the site for workshops on gardening, home canning and home fermenting.

We must return to “livability” instead of “regional growth” as the core guiding principle in planning, and respect for neighbourhood plans and current zoning in land use decisions. There is sufficient capacity within current zoning to accommodate growth. The shift to high density spot rezoning is poor public policy: it undermines land use plans, creates social conflict and leads to land speculation. Greens support smart growth that’s based in complete, walkable neighbourhoods including more development near existing stores, recreation and transit routes. We support urban agriculture, more farmer’s markets and more parks and green space.

This initiative enhances the City’s food security and reducing the City’s ecological footprint by reducing “distance to fork” through encouraging more locally grown, culturally appropriate and affordable food production. Over the last three years Vision Vancouver Council has approved several policies including: developing Urban Agriculture Design Guidelines for new private developments; passing a motion in support of Farmers Markets and supporting the Vancouver Food Strategy.

In addition to supporting community gardens and accessible parks, we will continue to make land use decisions that deliver affordable housing supply and world-class amenities including recreation and cultural facilities, child care, community police and fire services. Our NPA Park Board will also support developing an educational working farm to promote food sustainability.

For NSV, the most important thing is to work together with the people of Vancouver to ensure growth at a scale and pace that is right for our communities. Currently, big developers provide a lot of funding for the major political parties here and, in return, are often favoured in land-use decisions. Communities should have an equal voice when it comes to these decisions. COPE would also champion the “C-Pass” a bulk buy public transit pass for neighbourhoods, similar to the “U-Pass”. COPE supports an enhanced Master Cycling Plan that will look at driving, cycling and walking across the city, linking more routes with a mind to keep everyone in Vancouver safe, whether in a car, on a bike, or on foot. On school board, COPE will continue working to provide enhanced education to promote safe courteous cycling.

A large part of my vision of Vancouver as the largest community transitioning to self-sufficiency in the world has to do with drastically reducing our reliance on privately owned cars. I support the creation more public transit options by way of increasing bus and sky train service, and creating a citywide bike share program. As transit availability grows, we can phase in tolls on all intra-city bridges, providing significant rebates based on income. I will also do everything I can to change the fact that local transit policy is dictated by a non-elected Translink board.

Adriane Carr, Green Party

@AdrianeCarr

A healthy city requires reducing car use. That means offering people convenient, safe and affordable transportation options. Greens first championed a city cycling network in 1984. We support completing this network, including more bike lanes. We also support increasing pedestrian routes and pedestrian safety—including better bylaw enforcement so cyclists don’t use sidewalks. To increase the use of public transit we advocate strong lobbying for the purchase of more busses, and establishing some exclusive bus lanes on routes such as Broadway and Hastings. We support infrastructure that facilitates the shift to electric vehicles and expanding Vancouver’s electric trolley system.

Vision Vancouver

@visionvancouver

Vision Vancouver will build on our priority of pedestrian infrastructure, enhance pedestrian safety by expanding intersection improvements, and lower car speeds in certain neighbourhoods to make it safe for people of all ages. Working in close co-operation with residents and businesses, we will continue to grow the bike network to improve accessibility, safety and convenience for cyclists. We will also implement a bike-sharing program. Vision will build on our successful advocacy for the Canada Line and Translink’s funding plan to improve public transit in our city. Our immediate transit priority is to add more buses on busy routes and improve late-night service. Vision Vancouver’s overarching priority is to work with Translink and the BC government to develop our east-west rapid transit along the Broadway corridor to UBC.

NPA
@NPAVancouver
Our NPA Team will bring balance and fairness back to Vancouver’s transportation policy. With regard to transit, the NPA will re-establish Vancouver’s Streetcar Line to connect residents, customers and tourists from Granville Island, the Olympic Village and Science World to Chinatown, Waterfront Station and the region’s rapid transit network. Establish and maintain the UBC Line as Metro Vancouver’s top rapid transit funding priority following the Evergreen Line. Support on-going improvements to the 99-B Line—including temporary shelter for line-ups at Broadway and Commercial exchange. Vancouver’s NPA has a strong history of creating hundreds of kilometers of bike lanes without any controversy. We will restore the NPA’s collaborative approach and support expansion of local cycling infrastructure across Vancouver—including bridge connection from Central Valley Greenway to False Creek Flats and completion of Kent Street bikeway.

NSV supports expanding the trolley bus system to replace diesel buses and we would like to explore the potential for rail technology in the city. When it comes to new transportation developments, we would seek community input by providing transparent information on all options and putting out opinion surveys. We would also use a polluter-pay system for funding transit projects such as gas taxes, carbon taxes and vehicle levies rather than user-pay through increased fees. Transit needs to be inexpensive so that people will be encouraged to use it. NSV also advocates for an elected and accountable TransLink Board to replace the existing unaccountable provincially appointed board. Finally, we are also supportive of increased access for cycling in the city.

While living harmoniously with our planet and its finite resources has never been more important, I think the term “green” has been so overused and so misused as to be completely meaningless. Vision Vancouver has over 85 initiatives underway to make Vancouver a world leader in 10 different environmental policy areas ranging from climate to green spaces to local food. Vision Vancouver started Vancouver’s first curbside compost program for single-family homes, with plans in the works to expand it to apartments and multi-unit buildings. Our City now has the lowest per capita GHG emissions in North America. We advocated for and helped secure a transit U-Pass for all Vancouver post-secondary institutions, and fought for new investments in public transit. Vision also provided an opportunity for all parties to discuss Oil Tanker traffic up the coast.

The NPA’s historic track record of making sustainable land use decisions, is one of the reasons Vancouver is one of the greenest and best cities to live in the world. Our NPA City Council will continue this leadership and make sustainable land use decisions. Transportation is a key element of our NPA environment plan. We will re-establish Vancouver’s Streetcar Line to increase transit options for high-density downtown neighbourhoods around False Creek. Support UBC Line as Metro Vancouver’s top rapid transit funding priority and on-going improvements to the 99-Broadway Line. Expand local cycling infrastructure —including bridge connection from Central Valley Greenway to False Creek Flats and completion of Kent Street bikeway. Support “Walk to Schools” programs. Create an Independent Pedestrian Advisory Committee to provide meaningful input on pedestrian issues and Vancouver’s capital plan—particularly as it relates to accessibility for seniors and people with disabilities.

NSV is strongly dedicated to the protection of the environment. We would encourage green renovations and energy efficient construction. We would also minimize rezoning that diverts development from rapid transit areas in order to avoid urban sprawl. Finally, we plan to expand Vancouver’s recycling and composting programs.

Protect and enhance Vancouver’s green spaces by working with neighbourhoods in identifying, developing, improving and expanding all Community Amenities. Strengthen relationships between the Neighbourhoods, Community Centres and the Parks Board. That there are more off-leash dog parks and that current policies be looked into and improved. Protect and enhance Vancouver’s Wildlife by implementing more Park Rangers with Educational Tools rather than Policing Tools, such as information pamphlets and what effect humans are having on Nature. We need to protect our coastline during the mating and birthing seasons of our Wildlife by closing off certain sections of beach areas for that period of time. Protect and enhance Vancouver’s Shoreline by re-developing our shores to support micro eco systems. To open up access to the Fraser River again for the Residents of Vancouver.

On School Board, COPE continues to support Mandarin emersion programs and wants more support for ESL students in Vancouver schools. COPE will launch a review of all historical bylaws to ensure those deemed racist or otherwise discriminatory are repealed. For example: there are still racist property deeds which state that certain land cannot be sold to Chinese people. COPE will continue to support settlement services and coordinate with federal and provincial authorities to make sure new immigrants living in Vancouver are supported. COPE supports neighbourhood houses and enhanced community centre programming to engage new immigrants.

Vancouver’s vibrancy and charm are rooted in its cultural diversity and unique neighbourhoods. Greens at all political levels support the cultural programs and community services that strengthen this diversity and support new immigrants. In Vancouver that includes support for organizations like S.U.C.C.E.S.S. and for events and festivals that celebrate our cultural heritage. It also includes assured funding for community libraries that offer free ESL learning centres and help with job searches.

Vision Vancouver supports the work done by the Mayor’s Working Group on Immigration. There were three main objectives of the of the Working Group the first was to initiate a dialogue between First Nations and leaders in the ethnic communities. The second was an innovative mentorship program which pairs new immigrants with a city staff member, who volunteers to give personal advice and support, to help the participants navigate the job market. The third initiative was to investigate the challenges that temporary foreign workers face in Vancouver. The results of this work will be reviewed by the Mayor for action.

Many new immigrants to Vancouver are small business people. Our NPA plan will support small businesses by providing tax relief and cutting red tape as described. The NPA has a strong track record of delivering successful partnerships with other levels of government to benefit Vancouver’s long-term social and economic prosperity. Examples include historic social and supportive housing partnerships, unwavering support for Olympic Games, the Canada Line and restoration of Stanley Park. In our next mandate, an NPA City Council will build on that track record of success by identifying a reliable set of collaborative objectives with national, provincial and regional governments to promote economic prosperity. This will include a significant emphasis on immigrant settlement programs – particularly in schools. To celebrate Vancouver’s diverse communities.

Although immigration is not something dealt with directly at the civic level, NSV believes that City Council should act as advocate and activist on behalf of the people of Vancouver when dealing with higher levels of government. We need people with experience in working with immigrant groups to participate in City advisory committees and neighbourhood councils. NSV is dedicated to ensuring that these groups are representative of Vancouver’s diversity. Often affordability is an issue for new immigrants.
