Voting 101 - All About Voting in Canada

Let's Prove the Statistics Wrong!

So, you’ve never voted before. Or you did once, but it was more like playing darts, blindfolded in a crowded bar than making a real decision. Maybe you didn’t think it made a difference or maybe you lost interest or became disillusioned with the whole process, and you haven’t bothered since.

Whatever the reason, you are not alone. A lot of us are staying away from the polls. While overall voter turnout among Canadians is at an unprecedented low, it’s us young people who are least likely to cast a ballot. In the 2006 Federal election, young voter turnout was approximately 44% (as compared to the elder population - at 78%!)

Obviously those of us under 30 are not all alike. We are as diverse and unique as snowflakes, fingerprints, flowers in a field, blah, blah, blah.… you get the idea. One thing we do have in common is how little we vote! You can change this.

Why Should I Vote This May?

The upcoming BC election is particularily important this time because not only are we choosing who is going to represent our riding, we are also going to be voting in a referendum choosing what type of voting system we want to support for the future.

For more details on what the heck this means, check out our section on BC STV and our current electoral system, found if you click on "THE ISSUES" to your left. Have fun!
